The 1999–2006 GMT800 run breaks into three main groups.

1999–2002 — Early Years

The 1999–2002 trucks are the original GMT800s. They came with the first run of the 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, and 8.1L Vortec engines, and GM made small refinements year after year as the platform matured.

The 1999 model year had the most early-production quirks, so 2001–2002 trucks are usually the better picks if you want the early GMT800 style with a few more bugs worked out.

The 1999–2002 trucks used different electronics, wiring, and BCM setups than the later 2003–2006 trucks. The HD models had the earlier “Bubble Eye” front end, which still has a strong following today. These trucks could also be optioned nicely, with leather, a sunroof, power accessories, and heated seats depending on trim.

The 1999–2002 trucks were also more likely to have small convenience features like underhood lighting, under-dash courtesy lights, cabin air filters, and serviceable inline fuel filters. 2003–2006 — Late Years

The 2003–2006 trucks are the best overall pick for most buyers. They got the refreshed front fascia, updated interiors, more mature electronics, and a more refined feel overall.

The 2003+ trucks are usually the better choice for buyers who want the newer GMT800 look, improved cabin layout, and fewer early-production quirks.

The HD trucks also got the “Cat Eye” front end, and 2500HD/3500 models commonly had hydroboost brakes, which are a meaningful real-world improvement for towing, hauling, and hard stops.
