• Advance Design (1947–1955 1st series): Chevy’s first postwar truck. Rounded fenders, five-window cabs, and a one-piece windshield on later builds.

• C/K first series (1960–1966): The switch to C (2WD) / K (4WD) naming and cleaner slab-side styling.

Buying & what to check

• Verify the VIN and trim tag against the year — many classics have swapped cabs, beds, and drivetrains.
• Prioritize solid sheet metal over a running engine. Rust repair costs far more than a rebuild on these trucks.

Rust, body & restoration

• Check the usual failure points: cab corners, floor pans, rockers, lower doors, bed floors, and cab mounts.
• Reproduction sheet metal is widely available for 1947–1972 — panels, floors, and full beds can be sourced new.

Brakes, steering & drivability

• Most classics left the factory with 4-wheel drums. A front disc conversion is one of the most common and worthwhile upgrades on a driver.
• Worn steering boxes and loose linkage are common after decades of use — go through the front end before trusting it on the highway.

Engine, fuel & swaps

• Originals ranged from the inline-six (216 / 235 / 250) to Chevy small-blocks (283 / 327 / 350). Many are still on their factory drivetrains.
