P0014 Code on Silverado & Sierra: Exhaust Cam Timing Over Advanced

P0014 is the exhaust cam equivalent of P0011 — it means the exhaust camshaft (bank 1) is over-advanced relative to the ECM’s commanded position. The same Variable Valve Timing system that controls the intake cam also controls the exhaust cam on GM’s dual VVT engines (Gen IV 5.3L, 6.0L, and 6.2L). P0014 and P0011 often appear together, which points more strongly to oil pressure or timing chain issues affecting both cams simultaneously.

P0014 vs. P0011: Key Differences

  • P0011 = Intake cam, bank 1, over-advanced
  • P0014 = Exhaust cam, bank 1, over-advanced
  • Both together = Oil pressure problem or timing chain stretch affecting the entire bank 1 cam system
  • P0014 alone = Exhaust cam solenoid or phaser specific to exhaust side

Causes and Diagnosis

The cause list is identical to P0011 — work through the same steps:

  1. Check oil level and condition. Change if overdue. Clear codes.
  2. If code returns — replace the exhaust cam phaser solenoid (bank 1). The exhaust solenoid is a separate part from the intake solenoid — same part number format but different location on the head. Check application fitment when ordering.
  3. If P0014 + P0011 both return after solenoid replacement — timing chain or oil delivery issue. Inspect for cold-start timing chain rattle.
  4. Check oil pressure at idle with a mechanical gauge (not the dash gauge, which only reads high/low). Should be 25–35 PSI at hot idle. Below 20 PSI at hot idle = oil pump, bearing clearance, or oil pickup tube screen clogged.

The Right Fix by Mileage Range

  • Under 80K miles: Oil change + solenoid replacement fixes 90% of cases
  • 80K–120K miles: Solenoid replacement + monitor for chain rattle. Consider proactive phaser replacement.
  • Over 120K miles with rattle: Full timing chain kit (front cover off job) — chain, tensioners, guides, and phasers. Budget $600–$1,500 at a shop. Prevents more expensive future failures.
