P0455 Chevy Silverado: Large EVAP Leak Diagnosis and Fix
P0455 on a Chevy Silverado indicates the EVAP (evaporative emission control) system has detected a large leak — meaning fuel vapors are escaping to the atmosphere from somewhere in the evap system. This is usually a gas cap issue but can involve the EVAP canister or lines. Here’s how to diagnose and fix it on 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L trucks.
What P0455 Means
The EVAP system captures fuel vapors from the fuel tank and routes them to the engine for combustion rather than venting them to the atmosphere. The ECM runs periodic leak tests by sealing the system and monitoring pressure. P0455 is stored when the system fails to hold pressure — indicating a large leak (greater than 0.080 inches in diameter). This is different from P0442 (small leak) and P0440 (general EVAP system fault).
Most Common Causes
On Chevy and GMC trucks, P0455 is caused by: a loose or missing gas cap (most common — check this first), a cracked or damaged fuel cap seal, a split or disconnected large EVAP hose, a failed EVAP vent solenoid, or a cracked EVAP charcoal canister. The gas cap alone accounts for roughly 50% of P0455 codes on GMT800 and GMT900 trucks.
Diagnosis Steps
Step 1: Remove the gas cap, inspect the rubber O-ring seal for cracks or deformation, reinstall firmly (until it clicks), clear the code, and drive. If P0455 returns, proceed further. Step 2: Visually inspect all large-diameter EVAP hoses running from the fuel tank to the charcoal canister and from the canister to the intake. Step 3: Check the EVAP vent valve — it’s typically mounted near the charcoal canister and can fail stuck open. Step 4: For a definitive diagnosis, perform a smoke test — a shop smoke machine pressurizes the EVAP system and visually reveals leaks.
Gas Cap Fix
A quality replacement fuel cap costs $10–25 (OEM GM or Stant brand recommended). Avoid no-name caps — a poor seal quality cap will cause the code to return. Some GM trucks have a known-bad OEM cap from the factory — if the original cap fails inspection, replace it with a new OEM or Stant cap.
Related EVAP Codes
P0455 (large leak) is related to P0442 (small leak) and P0496 (EVAP purge flow high). A P0455 that returns after gas cap replacement typically points to the vent solenoid or canister.
