If you’re still running the factory 1.5-DIN radio in a 1999–2002 GMT800, a double-DIN swap is one of the cleanest interior upgrades on the truck — CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, navigation, and a backup camera without butchering the dash. But it is not a plug-and-play swap. Here’s how to do it the right way, and the one dash cut nobody warns you about.

Which trucks this covers
1999–2002 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, plus the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Avalanche, and Escalade on the same early GMT800 dash. 2003–2006 GMT800 trucks are different — see the note at the end.
Why it’s not a direct swap
The 1999–2002 trucks came with a 1.5-DIN (“DIN-and-a-half”) opening — bigger than the GMT400 single-DIN, but still not a true double-DIN.

The 2003–2006 refresh did get a factory double-DIN, but the dash layout changed and the HVAC controls sit lower on the 99–02 trucks. A 03–06 bezel will not line up on a 99–02 dash without relocating the HVAC controls — don’t go down that road. Use a proper 99–02 double-DIN conversion bezel instead.
What you need
- A double-DIN dash bezel made for 99–02 GM trucks. The Metra and DNA Motoring kits both fit. A black textured bezel matches the factory switch/HVAC panel best; if the shade is off, it preps and paints well with SEM interior products (a shot of 303 Protectant afterward helps keep the finish from fading).
- A quality double-DIN head unit — I’ve run the Kenwood DMX709S.
- A GM radio wiring harness adapter — the Metra 70-2001 fits 94–04 GM, so you plug into the factory connector instead of cutting it.
- The factory head-unit mounting brackets (or replacements — Metra still makes them).
- An antenna adapter (Metra 40-GM10) if you’re keeping factory AM/FM.
- Reuse your OEM bezel clips. Aftermarket clips are flimsy and won’t hold tight — you can feel the difference.



The dash cut nobody warns you about
Behind the radio opening there’s a plastic tab that will stop a double-DIN from seating. Without trimming it, the new unit won’t drop into the dash. Cut the tab flush with the dash using a Dremel, oscillating tool, or rotary tool. Move any wiring out of the way first, go slow for a clean cut, and vacuum the dust as you go so it doesn’t fall into the vents.


Wiring
Use the harness adapter — do not cut the factory harness. Crimp the adapter to the head-unit leads (butt connectors work; solder and heat-shrink is stronger), matching the GM radio color code. If you’re keeping the factory antenna, add the antenna adapter. Retaining the factory wiring keeps the install clean and reversible.



Install, start to finish
- Remove the factory 1.5-DIN radio.
- Trim the plastic tab flush as above.
- Wire the head unit through the harness adapter.
- Bolt the factory (or replacement) slide-in brackets to the new deck and set it at the correct height.
- Guide the wiring behind the deck, install the new bezel, and seat it with the OEM clips.

Done right, you get a full double-DIN that looks like it came from the factory — and you’re set up for front and rear cameras.
If you have an 03–06
Those trucks are already double-DIN. You’ll typically just trim a bit of the upper dash bezel for fitment — no conversion bezel needed.
